Suspense Voters

Harris County has over 300,000 voters with “suspense” status.

A “suspense voter” is a registered voter whose address could not be confirmed by election officials.

You can check if you are “active” or “suspense” by visiting the Texas Secretary of state’s website.

How does a voter make the suspense list?

A voter is placed in suspense if any of the following has been returned as non-deliverable:

  • Registration renewal certificate
  • Jury summons
  • Any mailing sent to the voter

How do I change my status back to active?

You can go from “suspense” to “active” by updating your address before October 7, which is the deadline to register to vote.

Can a suspense voter still vote?

If you are a suspense voter, you can still vote, but will have to update your voter registration by filling out a “statement of residence” form at your polling location.

If you have moved to another county, you will either have to vote in the county where you registered or submit a provisional ballot.

Your provisional ballot will count as long as you visit your county’s registrar office by November 11 with an acceptable form of ID:

  • Texas driver’s license
  • Texas ID card
  • Texas handgun license
  • Military ID with photograph
  • Citizenship certification with photograph
  • Passport
  • Texas election identification certificate
